Proposal of a system for mounting paper studies using neodymium magnets: the case study of three preparatory drawings by Rui Filipe

Abstract

TThis article describes the strategy used to suspend large-scale paper studies in an exhibition context based on the application of neodymium magnets. The three studies by the artist Rui Filipe (1929-1997), executed in oil on paper, were part of the exhibition Rui Filipe: Em Busca do Absoluto, at the Museum of Neo Realism (MNR) in Vila Franca de Xira. The application of this system allowed the studies to be presented to the public in a safe manner and respecting the criterion of minimum intervention of the works. The choice of neodymium magnets was due to their magnetic capacity. The studies were also the target of a conservation and restoration intervention, since they presented damages resulting from the aging of the materials, the techniques used by the artist and the inadequate packaging to which they were subjected for years.

Author Biographies

Paula Loura Batista, Museu do Neo-Realismo

Museu do Neo-Realismo desde setembro 2012. Técnica Superior de História, Variante de História da Arte (Licenciatura na FCSH/Universidade Nova de Lisboa, 1998). Curadora e Gestora da Coleção de Artes Plásticas do MNR. Desenvolve investigação no âmbito do património neorrealista e em Arte Contemporânea (autora e co-autora de artigos nas publicações do MNR e noutras publicações); Co-organizadora de colóquios nacionais e internacionais, destacando “The Museum Reader – Is the museum a batllefield?” (2018); Co-curadora de ciclo de arte contemporânea COSMO/POLÍTICA no MNR (com Sandra Vieira Jürgens 2017-2021). De janeiro de 1999 a agosto de 2012 (Museu Municipal de Vila Franca de Xira). Concebeu exposições, desenvolveu investigação sobre o património concelhio (revisão do PDM/Carta de Património), produziu atividades de educação patrimonial e coordenou equipas de trabalho de inventariação, estudo, salvaguarda e divulgação do Património Cultural do Concelho, com destaque para a coordenação técnica do POCm - Programa Operacional de Cultura.

João Miguel Salgado, Núcleo de Conservação e Restauro da Câmara Municipal de Vila Franca de Xira

João Miguel Salgado é Bacharel de Conservação e Restauro pela Escola Superior de Conservação e Restauro de Lisboa, especializado em pintura de cavalete (1993). Licenciado em Conservação e Restauro pelo Instituto Politécnico de Tomar (2004). Iniciou a sua atividade na empresa OCRE (1994 - 1998). Integrou os quadros da Câmara Municipal de Santarém como Técnico de Conservação e Restauro (1998-2004) e como Técnico Superior de Conservação e Restauro (2004 - 2013). Integra, na atualidade, os quadros da Câmara Municipal de Vila Franca de Xira (2013- ao presente).

Ana Sofia Neves, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Belas-Artes, Centro de Investigação e de Estudos em Belas-Artes (CIEBA)

Ana Sofia Neves é doutoranda na Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa (FBAUL). Investigadora colaboradora do Centro de Investigação e de Estudos em Belas-Artes (CIEBA), desde 2019. Licenciada em Escultura – Laboratório de Conservação e Restauro de Gessos, pela FBAUL (2013-2016). Mestre em Ciências da Conservação, Restauro e Produção de Arte Contemporânea, pela FBAUL (2016 - 2020), com um projeto de investigação que visou a criação embalagens de acondicionamento, com recurso a tecnologias digitais 3D, para medalhas contemporâneas. Atualmente é assistente técnica do Núcleo de Conservação e Restauro da Câmara Municipal de Vila Franca de Xira.
