PressHere living-archive as a post-industrial legacy: a visual essay on the artistic and educational activation of images of European industry
Abstract
PressHere living-archive is a visual essay that shares the origins, conceptualization, and implementation of the project PressHere, a living archive of European Industry. Initiated from the abundance of photographic records of industrial history in the archives of Casa da Imagem (Portugal) and the IMI-Gabrovo Museum (Bulgaria), PressHere activates a unique cultural legacy on the history of the industry, particularly the photographic image industry. Its interdisciplinary approach, involving mediation and the arts, aims to sensitize young people from different levels of compulsory education to the post-industrial heritage in Europe.
Structured around a Research Guide, the project defines and debates concepts such as post-industrialism, systemic reality, human and labor rights, gender equality, sustainability, and industrial heritage. This visual essay presents the theoretical-practical strategies of transdisciplinary research leading to the Guide, the steps of its implementation (lives), tested with schools. Above all, it reports the diversity of visual processes inherent to the research, implementation, and preliminary results of the living-archive (2021-2023).
