Minimum invasive sampling method using hollow punch for tropical wood identification on Indonesian cultural heritage

Abstract

The collection of wood samples is an important step, especially for the identification of wood in cultural heritage. Furthermore, in wood sampling, it is preferable to avoid any damage to minimize destruction to the objects. This study aimed to observe the effectiveness of the minimally invasive sampling method using a hollow punch for wood identification on wooden cultural heritage, such as the Panji mask (Java).
The materials used as a testing model were three tropical wood species. Sampling was conducted with various diameters of hollow punch at transverse, tangential, and radial sections. The anatomical structures were compared to the features according to the IAWA list of microscopic features for hardwood identification. The result showed that the most effective method was to take samples using a 1.5 mm diameter of hollow punch at the tangential section of wood.

Widyanto Dwi Nugroho, Department of Forest Product Technology, Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Dr. Widyanto Dwi Nugroho, S. Hut., M.Agr. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Forest Product Technology, Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He is also Vice Dean of Academic, Student and Partnership Affairs in the Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada from 2022 and the head of Wanagama Wood Museum, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He received his Ph.D. from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Japan, in 2012. His main research interests are wood identification, wood anatomy, and wood formation. His recent activity on wood identification is wood identification of charcoalified wooden buildings at the Liyangan Site, buried by material from the eruption of Mount Sindoro, located in Temanggung Regency, Central Java, Indonesia.

Fanany Wuri Prastiwi, Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Gadjah Mada

Fanany Wuri Prastiwi (1999) has completed her undergraduate study at the Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia, with Forest Product Technology major. She resides in Yogyakarta and works as a research assistant. Her main interests are wood anatomy, wood identification, and wood formation. She involved in several research activities, such as wood identification on the cultural heritage, the formation of reaction wood in tropical trees, the stimulation of agarwood formation, and the evaluation of the quality of 20-year-old teak clones (Tectona grandis) from Perhutani Indonesia, based on their physical, mechanical, anatomical, and chemical properties.
