Fireproof fabrics and in situ protection systems in the safeguarding of cultural property in emergencies
Abstract
This article describes the study carried out at the Museo del Prado to select materials and systems for the in situ protection of its collections in emergencies. It is based on the premise of a feasible option for the in situ protection of works that, due to their material or formal nature, significance, or use within the collection, would allow it or would be advisable to prioritize it over a transfer due to ordinary circumstances or an evacuation in the event of extraordinary circumstances. Initially, the protection needs of cultural property are defined by distinguishing the options available to combat some or most of the most common risks. In a subsequent analysis, four materials developed on the market are compared, focusing on the so-called “fireproof fabrics,” pointing out their characteristics and properties. This is followed by an assessment of the aspects to consider when used as emergency covers on works of art that are sensitive to high temperatures, flames, water, and particle deposits.
