Methodological proposal for the stylistic and technical analysis of images of round-shaped clothing. Application to a 17th century image
Abstract
This article aims to develop a methodological proposal to study the hidden and undervalued aspects of vested polychromed freestanding sculpture: internal structures and construction systems, assemblies and joints, and the enhancement of these studies as a model of stylistic and technical analysis that allow deepening the knowledge of the authorship, avatars and interventions of the images. In addition, the aim is to establish a series of recommendations for the conservation-restoration of mannequin vested sculpture. To do this, a fundamental aspect has been to clarify the concept of "clothing image" and the recognition of its different typologies, an essential previous step to achieve an effective enhancement. The methodology has been applied to a 17th century image of Sto. Domingo de Guzmán, which has allowed it to be attributed to Juan de Mesa y Velasco (1583-1627), a famous image sculptor of the Sevillian school of the 17th century.
